Medicine through time breadth - Edexcel
An interative day session on the Medicine unit (content, structure and marks).
Service Description
Many students find focused revision difficult for the GCSE, and this session is designed to target three key areas: 1 – Chronology and specific factual detail. 2 – Context 3 – Exam skills and ‘the perfect answer’ The day starts with an overview of the Medicine unit (content, structure and marks). Students are issued with a provided revision book for the day. There is an overview of the period – focusing on the key themes of the course. These are identifying continuity and change over the unit and looking at the big themes – treatments, the development of science in treatment and care, case studies of the Great Plague, William Harvey, the Black Death and fighting cholera. There is also analysis of how religion and science has played a key role. There is also a review of medicine in the Western Front during the 1st World War. Students then hear and see some interactive interviews with key witnesses from the key moments of the period. There is an opportunity to ask questions. There are 12 witnesses in total. Support notes are in the booklet. Finally, there is an ‘exam-busting’ session which allows students to consider ‘good’ and ‘bad’ examination answers. They have copies in their booklet, but there is a chance to annotate, discuss and ask questions about the exam. This will tackle some of the common mistakes made in the examination; and will also look at how to ‘get unstuck’ when in the pressure of the exam room. Each question stem will be examined. The session will be interactive, fast-moving and relevant to the demands of the Edexcel paper. Students will have plenty of opportunity to ask questions.
